A Brief History of Humphreys Skitt & Company The first mention of the firm is on the 12th September, 1793, when George Allen was appointed Agent to the Sun Fire Office for Greenwich, Kent.
Since 1853 the name "Humphreys" has appeared in the title of the firm. Henry Humphreys took into partnership his son, Henry Newman Humphreys, and his chief assistant, Arthur Skitt.
At this time the firm had a considerable auction practice, frequent sales being held at the Auction Mart in the City of London. Towards the end of the nineteenth century they were engaged in estate development in various districts. They were also managing agents of the Sheriff Deptford Estate and the Estate of Sir Coles Child.
Henry Humphreys died in 1892 and his son in 1899. The practice was continued by Arthur Skitt until 1913, when he admitted into partnership his son, Howard Skitt, and his chief assistant, Charles Christopher Chipp.
On February 22nd, 1945, the offices at Nos. 271/273 Greenwich High Road were totally destroyed by enemy action, resulting in the loss of many old records, including the original eighteenth-century tithe map of Greenwich, the firm having acted as Receivers of Tithe for the Parish of Greenwich until the Tithe Act, 1936. Ledgers dating back to the early nineteenth century were also lost.
Today, the partnership operates from a fine Georgian office building close to Greenwich station and our Blackheath office is prominently situated in the centre of Blackheath Village.
